I was plagued
with burning in the background—
ablaze among the forgotten
remnants of your life.
A memory gilded in golden embers
and encased in red flames
that had long been ignored,
until the ash of my flesh turned cold
and you brushed away my remains.
The sparks no longer flickered
and the glint burned out,
leaving nothing but smoke
and cinders at our feet.
All that survived the inferno
of your love
was my charred spirit.
The fire loosened its fervent grip
before consuming it whole,
releasing my soul
with a seared surface.
I was branded—
forever scarred
by your merciless pyre.
“Branded”, you have created spectacular imagery, well done!

Such powerful imagery! The “inferno of love” couldn’t have been expressed better. I think I read that more than three times because it just drew me in!

I love the poem. We all get burned when we get too close to the fire. And often we burn more when we rake the ashes.

You have rekindled flaming memories of the love of my life who died in 02 from drugs. Why can’t I find genuine compassion & passion again, with someone like me-drug free?
